How to choose the right oil for industrial chains?
To select the appropriate chain oil, you must consider the operating conditions, environment, load, and temperature. It is also important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations and specifications.
- Operating Conditions
Type of Load: Low or high load.
Temperature Range: Low, medium, or high temperatures.
Humidity and Corrosion Risk: Chains exposed to water or chemicals require additional protection. - Speed Mode
Chains with slow movements require thicker oil, while fast-moving chains need thinner oil to ensure smooth flow and minimal resistance. - Chain Type and Material
For Steel Chains: Standard or specialized lubricants.
For Chains with Special Materials (e.g., with plastic components): The oil must be compatible with the material.
Parameters for Selecting Chain Oils
- Viscosity (ISO VG)
For medium or heavy-load chains, use oils with ISO VG 100–320.
Example: Molyduval Sekorex Non Tox 320.
For low temperatures, use oils with lower viscosity (ISO VG 32 or 68).
Example: Molyduval Sekorex Non Tox 32. - Thermal Resistance
Chains operating at high temperatures (above 100 °C) require oils with high thermal stability. - Adhesiveness
Oils should adhere well to chain links and prevent dripping, especially in vertical or rotational movements. - Anti-Corrosion Properties
Oils that protect chains from rust and oxidation. - Washout Resistance
Crucial for chains exposed to water or moisture.
Which Chain Oil to Choose?
- Low Temperatures (Cold Environments)
Synthetic oils with lower viscosity (e.g., ISO VG 32 or 46).
Example: Molyduval Sekorex IL. - High Temperatures (Above 150 °C)
Synthetic oils, such as ester-based, with high oxidation resistance and minimal deposit formation.
Examples: Molyduval Sekorex Non Tox 150 or Molyduval Sekorex PLX series oils. - Wet and Corrosive Environments
Mineral or semi-synthetic oils with excellent corrosion resistance and water-repellent properties.
Examples: Molyduval Sekorex ET 280, Molyduval Sekorex K Spray, or Molyduval Sekorex IL. - Standard Industrial Chains
Mineral oils with ISO VG 100 or 150 viscosity. - High-Load Chains
Oils containing EP additives, such as Molyduval Sekorex PLX, which includes MoS₂ (molybdenum disulfide).
Additives Used in Chain Oils
- EP Additives (Extreme Pressure)
Provide protection against wear and heavy loads. - Antioxidants
Prevent oil oxidation and extend its service life. - Anti-Corrosion Additives
Protect the chain from rust and chemical corrosion. - Friction Modifiers
Reduce friction and improve lubrication efficiency. - Washout-Resistant Additives
Enhance the oil’s resistance to water exposure. - High-Temperature Stability Additives
Help maintain oil properties at high temperatures, preventing deposits and carbon buildup. - Adhesive Additives
Improve oil adhesion to chain links, preventing dripping during heavy vibrations or movement.
