Powdered wire

Flux-cored wire is a special type of welding wire that consists of a metal tube or shell with a powdered welding filler material inside.

Flux-cored wire is a special type of welding wire that consists of a metal tube or shell with a powdered welding filler material inside.

This powder can contain various elements, such as alloys or flux materials, that assist in the welding process and improve the quality of the joint. Flux-cored wire welding is popular because it offers better weld quality and allows working with thicker materials compared to other welding processes, such as MIG/MAG welding.

Main types of flux-cored wires:

  • Gas-shielded flux-cored wire (FCAW-G - Flux-Cored Arc Welding with Gas): This process uses an external shielding gas (usually CO2 or a mixture of argon and CO2) to protect the weld from atmospheric gases (oxygen and nitrogen), which could cause defects in the weld joint.
  • Self-shielded flux-cored wire (FCAW-S - Flux-Cored Arc Welding Self-Shielded): This type does not require external shielding gas, as the powder inside the wire itself releases gases to protect the weld from contamination. This makes it useful for outdoor work or situations where it is difficult to supply shielding gas.
